McDormand to mother Bale in 'Laurel Canyon'

Frances McDormand ("Fargo") and Christian Bale ("American Psycho") are poised to co-star in "Laurel Canyon," playing mother and son, Variety reports.

The project, written and to be directed by "High Art" director Lisa Cholodenko, casts Bale as a med-school graduate who convinces his fiancee to return to his vacant childhood home, Variety said.

When they arrive, though, they find his decadent record-producer mom, the role earmarked for McDormand, who indoctrinates the straight-laced couple into her wild lifestyle.

The project, which has been in development for four years, is budgeted at $6 to $10 million, the report said.
