Caine Lends Magic to 'Prestige' Pic

According toZap2it Oscar winner Michael Caine will reunite with his "Batman Begins" director and co-star on "The Prestige," one of two pics getting a casting boost from the erratically retired actor.
Christopher Nolan is directing "The Prestige" for Touchstone Pictures. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman star as rival magicians whose desperate battle for supreme illusions becomes deadly. After helping Bale become Batman earlier this year, Caine will switch sides to play a former magician who trains Jackman's character.

According to the industry trades, the $40 million production will begin shooting in January. Then Nolan can start fielding all of those "Batman" sequel questions again.

Caine will arrive on the "Prestige" set fresh off an appearance as an old hippie in Alfonso Cuaron's "The Children of Men," a sci-fi thriller starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore. That project has already started production in London.

Celebrated by the Academy for his work on "Hannah and Her Sisters" and "The Cider House Rules," Caine's latest effort, "The Weather Man," is now in theaters.

Bale & Jackman to Battle in The Prestige

Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are in talks to star in Touchstone Pictures' The Prestige, which will serve as Batman Begins helmer Christopher Nolan's next directorial outing, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Bale and Jackman will play rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London who battle each other for trade secrets. The rivalry is so intense that it turns them into murderers. The title refers to the residue left after a magician's successful trick.

The script is based on Christopher Priest's 1996 novel of the same name and was adapted by Nolan's brother, Jonathan. He wrote the short story on which Christopher's Nolan's breakout movie, Memento, was based on.

The movie will shoot in January with a budget around the $40 million range. Touchstone will distribute domestically, while Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute internationally.

"Prestige" reteams Nolan with Batman Begins star Bale, who is currently shooting Rescue Dawn in Thailand for Werner Herzog. Jackman is shooting X-Men 3 and next appears in Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain.
